If You Ain't Bloggin'...

I started blogging, according to my archives, in June of 2004 which means — incredibly — that I have been doing this for four years now. Equally incredible, there seem to be a bunch of people who care. Here are some random astonishing (to me, at least) facts:

1. Alexa ranks SmartBlog traffic in the top 7.84 percent of all websites.
2. Technorati ranks SmartBlog traffic in the top 1.44 percent of all blogs (as opposed to the statistic above, which applies to all websites).
3. According to websitegrader.com there are 3,853 inbound links to the SmartBlog.
4. According to BlogLines, a leading RSS reader, there are 9,881 subscribers to the RSS feed for the SmartBlog. They note, however, "This is usually a small fraction of the total subscribers to the feed." I have no idea what that means. We also have about 2,500 subscribers through Constant Contact.
5. Typepad says that the SmartBlog has received 54,785 lifetime page views.

I have no idea how this happened, except that it didn't happen through promotion. But it has definitely proved to me that at least two clichés about the Internet are true: 1. Content is king, and 2. If you build it, they will come.

My 12,500 or so subscribers must be small potatoes compared to Boing Boing and the Huffington Post, but I'll take it as proof that persistence pays and soldier on.

The lesson for lawyers and financial professionals: If you ain't bloggin', you ain't tryin'.

Some Of Mark's Favorite Films

  • Romeo and Juliet
Never was there a tale of more woe, than this of Juliet and her Romeo. Still the best version on film, and Zefferelli's masterpiece.
  • Stardust Memories
One of my favorite Woody Allen films, although not his most popular. Perhaps I love it because it is an homage to Fellini's Eight And A Half. As Woody says....."An homage? No, we just ripped it off."
  • Camille
The incomparable Greta Garbo at the height of her beauty and powers in a timeless romantic tragedy. The book is La Dame Aux Camillias, the opera is La Traviata. Both also wonderful.
  • Amadeus
Salieri works hard, kisses the right behinds, is chaste, and plays by the rules. So why has God given musical genius to Mozart, "that giggling, obscene child"? Sometimes life is unfair.
  • A Room With A View
My favorite Merchant & Ivory film. Daniel Day Lewis's portrait of Cecil Vyse is beyond funny. And Helena Bonham Carter's Lucy is wonderful. Also great: Denholm Elliott, Julian Sands, Simon Callow. And, star of the film: Florence, Italy.
  • Shakespeare In Love
I worship the Bard. I love this interpretation of his life. "Romeo and Ethel, The Pirate's Daughter." And I love Gwyneth Paltrow's reaction to the first time they make love: "Finally, there is something better than a play!"
  • Eight And A Half
The story of a film director suffering a creative block, a nervous breakdown, and a mid-life crisis — all at once. The narrative structure is a hallucination. pastiche of memory, fantasy, reality, and My favorite film.
  • The Philadelphia Story
One of my teachers once remarked that you cannot view this film without feeling that civilization has gone downhill.
